Phuket — Expensive, But Worth It If You Choose Right
Phuket is Thailand's most expensive retirement destination. There's no sugarcoating it. But it's also one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia, with an Andaman coastline that genuinely lives up to its postcard reputation.
The key to Phuket on a pension budget: avoid the tourist hotspots and live where Thais and long-term expats actually live. The difference in cost between a tourist area condo and a residential area rental is often 40–60%.
A car or motorbike is essential in Phuket. The island has no rail system and public transport is limited.
The Main Areas of Phuket
Patong — Avoid for Long-Term Living
Patong is Phuket's main tourist beach and party district. It's what most people picture when they think Phuket. High rents, constant noise, tourist crowds — not where long-term retirees want to be.
Rental costs: ฿20,000–฿40,000+ for a 1-bedroom.
Honest assessment: Great for a holiday. Not a sensible choice for retirement living.
Rawai / Naiharn (South Phuket)
Rawai and Naiharn in the south of Phuket are where the serious long-term expat community lives. Areas like Rawai, Kathu, or Nai Harn offer much better deals than tourist hotspots like Patong. Rawai has a local fishing village feel, a good expat community, and access to several beautiful quieter beaches like Naiharn Beach and Yanui Beach.
Who it suits: Retirees who want genuine Phuket lifestyle without the Patong chaos. Popular with Australian expats.
Rental costs:
- •1 Bedroom Condo: ฿14,000–฿20,000/month
- •2 Bedroom Condo: ฿20,000–฿30,000/month
- •2 Bed House with Pool: ฿30,000–฿45,000/month
Kathu (Central Phuket)
Kathu is an inland area in the centre of the island — less glamorous than coastal areas but significantly cheaper. Good access to Phuket Town and the west coast beaches. Several golf courses nearby.
Who it suits: Golfers. Budget-conscious retirees who don't need to be right on the beach.
Rental costs:
- •1 Bedroom Condo: ฿10,000–฿15,000/month
- •2 Bedroom Condo: ฿14,000–฿22,000/month
- •Townhouse: ฿12,000–฿18,000/month
Phuket Town
The island's capital is often overlooked by expats but is actually a wonderful place to live — full of Sino-Portuguese architecture, good local food markets, and a growing cafe and restaurant scene. Significantly cheaper than beach areas.
Who it suits: Retirees who appreciate culture, local food and lower costs over beach proximity.
Rental costs:
- •1 Bedroom Condo: ฿9,000–฿14,000/month
- •2 Bedroom Condo: ฿14,000–฿22,000/month
Cherng Talay / Laguna (North Phuket)
The north of Phuket around Bangtao Beach and the Laguna resort complex is where many upmarket expats live. Beautiful area, quieter than Patong, but expensive.
Rental costs:
- •2 Bed House with Pool: ฿40,000–฿70,000/month

My Recommendation
Phuket on a single pension works, but requires discipline with accommodation choice. Rawai, Kathu and Phuket Town give you genuine Phuket lifestyle at prices that leave something in the bank.
If you're a couple, Phuket becomes much more comfortable financially and is arguably the best lifestyle of any Thai retirement city.
